India is stepping up investments in battery energy storage systems (BESS) to complement the rapid expansion of solar and wind power. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi said that large-scale storage infrastructure will be crucial for integrating intermittent renewable energy into the national grid while ensuring reliable electricity supply. The government views battery storage as a key enabler for achieving its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Enhanced storage capacity is also expected to reduce curtailment of renewable power, improve grid resilience, and strengthen India’s energy security as electricity demand continues to grow.
