Despite efforts of health and sanitary experts, not just dengue, other mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and chikungunya are also on the rise, killing innumerable people every year. Bihar too registers a number of deaths due to these diseases, with experts pointing out that capital Patna, being one of the most polluted cities of the world, provides an ideal breeding ground for the mosquitoes. On World Mosquito Day, observed on August 20 to raise awareness about such diseases and commemorate British doctor Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery of the malaria parasite in the stomach of a female Anopheles mosquito in 1897, experts reiterate prevention is better than cure.
