Hydrogel to Tackle Microplastic Pollution

A team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) may have found a promising solution to the mounting problem: They have designed a sustainable hydrogel to remove tiny plastic particles from water. "The material has a unique intertwined polymer network that can bind the contaminants and degrade them using UV light irradiation," IISc said. Pointing out that scientists have previously attempted to use filtering membranes to remove microplastics, IISc noted that these membranes can become clogged with these tiny particles, making them unsustainable.
