Chennai Airport Turns Green, Runs Fully on Renewable Energy

The entire power requirement of the Chennai city airport, which handles around 20 million passengers per year, is now met by renewable energy. It uses a combination of power generated from rooftop solar plants, solar energy purchased from firms and also by procuring power under green tariff from Tangedco. This was achieved recently when the use of renewable energy was scaled up from 50 per cent. Solar power is used for runway and taxiway lights too. Of the electrical energy utilized by Chennai Airport, 59 per cent is solar energy being procured through third party power purchase, 3 per cent is being met through the in house 1.5MWp rooftop solar plant and remaining 38 per cent is being procured from Tangedco under green tariff.
