India Unveils Its National Strategy to Increase Forest Cover in Line with Paris Agreement

India has released its 'National REDD+ Strategy', one of the key tools to fulfil the country's commitment of increasing forest cover in a time-bound manner under the Paris Agreement on climate change. The national strategy, comprising a list of multiple ongoing and proposed actions on the ground to create additional carbon sink by increasing green cover, will soon be communicated to the UN body on climate change. Besides committing to reduce emission intensity of its GDP by 33-35 per cent by 2030 from 2005 level under the Paris deal, India has also pledged to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030. These commitments are part of the country's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the UNFCCC. The REDD+ aims to achieve climate change mitigation by incentivizing forest conservation.
