Innovative Restoration of Coral Reefs Helps Protect Caribbean Islands

Working in Grenville Bay in Grenada, a Caribbean country, researchers of University of California, Santa Cruz and the Nature Conservancy showed that degradation of coral reefs is directly linked to shoreline erosion and coastal flooding in parts of the bay. The study published in the Journal of Environmental Management, evaluates one of the first uses of reef restoration as natural infrastructure specifically designed to reduce risks to people and property. Investigating the link between healthy reefs and shoreline stability, the researchers found that Grenville's healthy reefs keep more than half of the bay's coastline intact by reducing the wave energy arriving on shore. In contrast, severe reef degradation is linked with chronic coastal erosion in the northern section of the bay, where the shoreline is disappearing at a rate of nearly two feet every year.

The inaugural CSP Today India awards ceremony takes place on March 12, and CSP developers, EPCs, suppliers and technology providers can now be nominated.

At the awards ceremony, industry leaders will be recognized for their achievements in one of 4 categories: CSP India Developer Award, CSP India Engineering Performance Award, CSP India Technology and Supplier Award, and the prestigious CSP India Personality of the Year.

Matt Carr, Global Events Director at CSP Today, said at the opening of nominations that “CSP Today are excited to launch these esteemed awards, which will enhance the reputation of their recipients. I am particularly excited to launch the CSP India Personality of the Year award, a distinguished honor for the industry figure deemed worthy by their peers."
